FOR EATING DISORDERS AND BODY IMAGE CONCERNS

Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes and can affect greatly not only the person struggling but the family, friends, and entire support system around that person.

Eating disorders can be very isolating and scary, causing the sufferer to lose sight of who they once were and who they wanted to be. I find lasting recovery comes when we not only address behavior management and medical stability but in tandem, address the “why” behind this unhealthy and dangerous coping mechanism.

I often ask my clients “what is this disorder doing for you?” If we don’t figure out the purpose, even when we enter medical recovery (if that’s needed), we will not have achieved lasting or sustainable recovery. Even our negative coping mechanisms have a purpose. They do something for us. When we figure out what that something is, what is keeping us stuck, what we are trying to quiet with the eating disorder or fill up and ignore with the eating disorder, then we have lasting change. I push clients to be honest with themselves about what that purpose is, where it came from and how we can work together to address it and move forward into a more fulfilled life.

I specialize in the following diagnosis:

  •      Anorexia Nervosa

  •     Bulimia Nervosa

  •      Binge Eating Disorder

  •      Orthorexia

  •      Over/excessive exercising

  •     Body Dysmorphia and other body image disturbances

I treat females and males aged 14 through later adulthood at varying levels of  recovery. Whether you are stepping down from a higher level of care or making the first step in admitting something may not be okay, I work to provide an open, honest and safe environment for you to explore what the purpose of your disordered behavior may be  affecting you and how to heal from it while also learning healthy coping skills to help you manage the discomfort throughout this process.

I do whole heartedly believe full recovery is possible, but I do not think it is easy or pretty. It is work and honesty and building trust with those around you but most importantly with yourself. I am here to push you and guide you through that process.

FAQS

Do I need other people like a doctor and dietician?

I work collaboratively to build a team, when necessary, of other skilled professionals such as specialized medical doctors, dietitians, and psychiatrists to treat the entire person physically and mentally.

This is decided on a case-by-case basis. I will discuss my recommendations and why I make them and will always offer options. Due to the medical and nutritional nature of eating disorders, often additional support is needed to cover all aspects of care and address every facet to impact lasting change.

How much does therapy cost?

I am an out of network provider for all insurance plans. I accept credit cards, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), Health Reimbursement Account (HRAs), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), cash and check. I require a card on file at all times. Payment is due at the time of service.

Session fees are $165 per 55 minutes

At your request, I will provide a superbill at the end of each month which you are able to submit directly to your insurance provider for direct reimbursement of any eligible out of network benefits you may have.

Why do you not take insurance?

Insurance providers require "medical necessity" for treatment - which means they only cover specific diagnoses, and do not acknowledge the many other valid reasons people wish to pursue therapy: personal growth and exploration, self-care, preventative mental health care, and improving relationships.

Insurance providers limit the number, length, and frequency of sessions (this should be decided between you and your therapist) and require counselors to share mental health records with them.

How long will I be in therapy?

There is no direct answer to this question. Eating disorder treatment is often lengthy and involves setbacks it is the nature of the disorder; however, the more honest you can be the more quickly I can work to help and guide you forward. Depending on the severity of the diagnosis eating disorder, clients are typically seen on a weekly basis.

As I was once told by a mentor “our goal is always to put ourselves out of business, clients should heal and move on from us!” I truly operate from that perspective, particularly with eating disorder treatment, the goal is to be swift and aggressive with this set of diagnosis and to return you to your normal day to day life.
